YWCA Chairman Sandy Park and CEO Roxanne Johnson presented Campbell with an award at the organization’s annual fundraiser in Bossier City June 29. Marvin’s Faith-based and Grass-roots Community Advisory Board recognized Campbell at its workshop July 12 in Bossier City.
Both groups were responding to a PSC initiative by Campbell earlier this year. Campbell authored a commission rule requiring utilities to waive deposits for victims of family violence when they establish a new residence. The commission unanimously adopted the rule at its February meeting.
Campbell said victims of domestic violence often face financial hurdles preventing them and their families from escaping an abusive home situation. Utility deposits for electricity, natural gas, telephone, water and sewer can exceed $500, he said.
The waiver authorizes police, emergency personnel and victims' advocates to certify victims for the deposit waiver.
“I am grateful to the YWCA and D.A. Schuyler Marvin for helping to draw attention to the problem of family violence and simple measures like the utility waiver that can help victims start a new life,” Campbell said.
